Trees cannot grow in desolation. When suffering malnutrition, trees require careful nourishment. Done well, previously weak roots strengthen and expand, and once withering leaves give way to florid ones. Likewise with our hearts. Ramadan arrives as a necessary intervention to the dramas unfolding online, revealing the heedless state of our beings. Prayer, charity, dua, and fasting nurture our souls. Without a life of worship, our souls weaken and our hearts harden. Worship in the month of Ramadan gives life to what was once enfeebled, reminding us of that which gives us purpose and meaning. There will be time to return to the daily grind, to the debates over who tweeted what and why, and whether we are on the right path. For the time being, let us continue in the spirit of Ramadan, beseeching Allah’s help in our endeavors and asking Him to accept from our worship.
Eid Mubarak — May Allah accept from us the good we did, forgive our shortcomings, and make us from those who pass away upon the kalima. Amin.
